Good morning!
I’ve been working on Handling Susannah‘s sequel, which is tentatively titled Catching Betsy, and I wanted to give you a little sneak peek of the dialog between these new characters. Hope you enjoy.
“I lied about my age because I wanted to be courted by someone older and without folly,” Betsy explained. “I behave in a manner more mature than my age would suggest, and I wanted to meet someone compatible with me.”
“Ha!” he laughed. “If compatibility is what you seek, I’m afraid you might be on the wrong track, my dear. We’re nearly exact opposites.”
She considered that a moment. “Yes, I would agree in part. We are as different as a wolf from a lamb, but just because we’re different doesn’t mean we’re incompatible. Don’t two opposites of a magnet cling together?”
He leaned back. “Spoken like a woman who is wise beyond her years,” he mused with a small smile. “But you must know that a wolf generally eats the lamb, so I’m not sure your example is entirely relevant in this instance.”
“It’s relevant,” she insisted. “Just not literal.”
“You think so? Then tell me, do you believe me to be the wolf or the lamb, Miss Blake?”
Without smiling, she said, “That depends, Mr. Mason. Are you inclined to bleat?”
Roderick’s eyes widened before he threw back his head and laughed. He did not stop laughing for some time, and when he finally did, he wiped tears from his eyes and said, “I rather think it will be you who does the bleating.”
She quirked her head. “Oh?”
He uncrossed his legs, leaned forward, and stared into her eyes, his gaze now sober. “What I feel inclined to do, Miss Blake, is to take you over my knee and teach you a painful lesson about honesty. That way, you will know my expectations for a woman I court. What say you now?”
She swallowed and studied his dark eyes, which glimmered with intensity that was no longer laced with humor. When she found her voice, she said softly, “I say you are most definitely the wolf, Mr. Mason.”
He nodded slowly. Straightening, he patted his leg. “Come on then, little lamb, and take what you have coming.”

Adam found out that Susannah has been complaining behind his back that he is bossy and unbearably strict. This is Adam’s reaction:
Adam tossed her over his lap, shoved down her drawers, and landed a swat on her quivering bare behind. “You’re about to find out how bossy I can be, young lady.”
She squealed and wriggled enticingly as he brought his hand down again and again in crisp swats.
“Open your legs,” he bossed.
She did so, revealing her sex to his view.
“Wider,” he growled.
She let out a little whimper as she obeyed, spreading her legs obscenely.
“You’re not allowed to move or make noise, no matter what. Got it, kitten?”
She let out a mewl. “What in the heavens are you doing, Adam?”
“I’m being unbearably strict, Susannah,” he informed her.
She giggled, which he allowed for only a couple seconds before bringing his hand down on her rump. “Silence begins now. Don’t make a peep, and don’t move either.”
She settled, and he spanked her soundly, catching the inside and backs of her thighs as well as her bottom. She took the swats stoically for some time, though he could tell by her body’s clenching that was struggling to absorb the pain. When he continued to spank her mercilessly with no sign of relenting, she eventually yelped, which was what Adam had been waiting for.
He paused. “Did you just make a sound?” A long silence lingered after the question, during which Adam rubbed her hot bottom and watched with amusement as she squirmed. “You disobeyed me, kitten,” his voice rumbled softly. “Now I have to punish that naughty cunny of yours.”

Adam stood to her side and curled his hand around the nape of her neck. Pinning her in place on the bed, he ran his other hand down the length of her back lightly. He landed a hard smack on her bottom and watched as his handprint bloomed over her cheek. He smacked her again on her other cheek and continued, finding a steady rhythm. Susannah remained in place, accepting the swats with small gasps and whimpers.
He continued spanking her, hard but slowly, pausing a moment after each spank to allow the full pain of it sink in. “You know you’ve earned this, don’t you? I can tell because you’re being a good girl and accepting it.”
“Yes, sir,” she said, her voice soft and submissive. “Thank you.”

She arranged her skirts to cover her bottom and wiped her wet cheeks with the backs of her hands. When she lifted teary eyes to meet his, she noticed that his gaze was kind.
“You all right?”
“Yes, sir.”
A slow smile appeared on his handsome face, displaying a dimple that looked quite boyish compared to the rest of him, which looked hard and manly. “My, my, a walloping really straightens you out, doesn’t it? That spanking wasn’t even very hard, and yet suddenly you’re as sweet as a little kitten.”
“I beg to differ,” she said with a pout.
His grin widened. “About what, kitten? That you’re sweet or that you’re straightened out?” His voice had a tease in it.
“You know what I mean! It was a very hard spanking,” she exclaimed in a fit of temper, feeling like he was making fun of her and not liking it one bit.
“Oh, it was not. Barely a pat and a tickle.

This sight of her naked and pinned, accepting discipline with nary a word of complaint, fed his need to claim and dominate her. “You’ll accept my leadership in the future. I’ve shown you I’m capable of taking care of this family and the ranch, and that’s what you need, isn’t it?”
“Yes, Adam. I need it so much,” she choked out.
He spanked her again. “And the next time I make a decision you don’t like, what will you do?”
“I’ll obey you,” she moaned.
“You certainly will. And what about that temper of yours?”
“I’ll keep it in check.”
He smacked her hard twice. “You’d better, young lady, if you like sitting occasionally.”

Today I’m providing an excerpt from a serious punishment in the book. I always like to write heroes with a sweet side, but in this snippet, that side to Adam is nowhere to be found. Punishment is the only thing on the menu. I hope you enjoy this scene as much as Susannah hated it. 🙂
She wrapped a hand around each of the bench’s legs and squeezed her eyes shut as he bared her bottom for punishment. It felt humiliating. Though they were the only people in the barn, she felt like the horses and milk cows were watching her as entertainment. First, he lifted each skirt and positioned the fabric on her back. With a tug at the ribbon of her drawers, they loosened around her. His hand slid under her belly and lifted her hips up briefly so that he could slide the material down her legs. His touch on her stomach was gentle and reminded her of how he touched her when they made love. A tickle of strange pleasure intermingled with her growing anxiety. Her drawers remained on her legs, just above her knees, which somehow made her feel even more vulnerable and naughty.
The minute that followed was the longest of her life. Cool air wafted over her bare skin, and she could feel her thighs shaking. Adam retrieved a strip of leather used to fasten the stirrup to his saddle. The strap was the length of her forearm after he doubled it.
He dropped the leather over her quivering cheeks, letting the implement of punishment reside there while he spoke. “You’re getting fifteen licks. They’re going to hurt, and you’re not to move from this position until you feel every last one. Do you understand?”
“Oh, Adam, you’re scaring me,” she cried, hating how harsh he sounded. No sign of his love for her could be detected in his voice, and it made her feel miserable.
A lick of fire across her cheeks made her gasp with alarm. It hurt far worse than she ever could have imagined.
“Do you understand?” he repeated with a raised voice.
“Yes!”
“If you move from this position, I will repeat the lick. Is that also understood?”
She sniffled. “Yes, sir.”

As some of you might have seen on Facebook, I have a new book coming out on March 31 called Handling Susannah. It’s my first indie book, and I’m excited to share it with you! In the meantime, please enjoy this excerpt.
Adam has just informed Susannah that he will be taking down her drawers. Mortified, she flies off his lap. The following is what happens next.
“You know you’ve earned this. Now come back over my knee. If you hadn’t made such a fuss, it would be nearly over by now.”
“Please, Mr. Harrington,” she pled. “Please don’t take down my drawers.” She rushed to think of an excuse and quickly found one. Proper women didn’t disrobe for a man before marriage. She wasn’t proper, of course, but he didn’t know that yet. She lifted her chin and said with more confidence than she felt, “It isn’t right since we aren’t yet married. I promise I have learned my lesson.”
He narrowed his eyes at her. She did her best to look contrite, and she was certain the tears aided her in doing so. Most men’s hearts softened when a woman cried, and she could only hope that Mr. Harrington’s did too.
“Oh, all right,” he relented. “I’ll give you a choice. You may either do as you’re told and come back over my knee where I will apply a few swats to your misbehaving bare ass, or I can finish this after we are married so that it will be deemed proper. Up to you.”
“After we’re married,” she said immediately. She believed that she would be able to convince him not to finish the spanking that night. If he was anything like other men, he would prefer to engage in other activities—much more pleasurable activities—with her naked body.
